Max Ernst (1891-1976) was a modern artist who spent his life struggling, fighting, escaping, being ostracized and arrested where he escaped. He was one of the revolutionary artists, who saw modern art as “immoral and insane” and lived during the reign of Hitler, the best-known dictator in history, whose works were confiscated and burned. In my opinion, the look he gave in his self-portrait in 1909 is a very powerful look that expresses the complex emotions we still experience today.
